Making sure your Employee Experience lives up to hype
The previous two posts unpacked what an ‘employee value proposition (EVP)’ is, why you need one, and how to create one (see previous blog posts on these).
Having a compelling EVP means you’re more likely to attract great people to apply for your roles. But once you’ve attracted great people, it’s equally if not more important to make sure their Employee Experience (EE) lives up to what they feel they were promised – otherwise you’ll find yourself back to the recruitment drawing board.
Once upon a time employees were much more likely to ‘suck it up’ if they felt the reality of a role didn’t live up to the promise – not so much in today’s culture and job market (and really, should they be expected to?).
Example 1: Your EVP promises a really supportive organisation where individuals will be nurtured and developed (which is likely to attract employees who either generally value feeling supported, or feel it’s something they need in this phase of their career). If during the onboarding phase that employee’s experience is more of a baptism of fire, with no support or structured learning and a Manager who is MIA – they’re going to feel pretty let down, and may start questioning whether the role is for them.
Example 2: Your EVP implies a really contemporary, agile organisation (attracting employees looking for a fast-paced, flexible, progressive environment). Vs what they experience is a clunky recruitment process that takes weeks, only to spend the first 3 weeks getting access to the systems required just to do their job, and layer upon layer of approvals to make any changes - chances are they're going to be a pretty receptive audience if a competitor comes along and taps them on the shoulder.
So how do you make sure the Employee Experience lives up to the hype you’ve (hopefully) created by your EVP?
1. Start with a compelling EVP in the first place
2. Map out key touchpoints or 'phases' in your employees’ journey
3. Optional – Create Employee Personas
4. Complete an Employee Experience journey map against these phases
5. Identify & Address the Gaps
